THIS WEBSITE IS CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION

The Way Dojo is currently in the process of applying for 501(c)(3) nonprofit status. We offer educational programs centered on traditional Okinawan karate while engaging with broader cultural arts such as music, movement, and dance. Our work includes research, documentation, and the sharing of live and recorded material to help preserve and connect with these living traditions. While our primary focus is karate, we also cultivate an appreciation for traditional music through listening and personal study, with plans to support live and recorded cultural expression as the dojo grows.

WELCOME TO THE WAY DOJO

THE WAY Dōjō 道場
OFFERING A place to practice, grow, and find your way

MISSION STATEMENT

The Way Dojo exists to share Okinawan karate as a living practice while engaging with movement, music, and cultural traditions that connect people to themselves and their communities. Through online and in-person programs, we create spaces where these traditions can be experienced, preserved, and passed on.

The dojo is more than a place to train—it is a space for practice, learning, and connection.
The Way Dojo is built on the idea that tradition is not something you only study, but something you live.
Through movement, music, and shared experience, we create environments that support growth of the body, clarity of the mind, and a deeper connection to self and community.
Whether in a physical space or on the road, this work is about bringing people together through real practice. Join us in the ongoing path of growth, connection, and discovery. Find your way.

Now offering 1 on 1 in person lessons. Online options soon to come. Contact us for more information.

Our mission is to preserve, teach, and pass down traditional Seibukan Shorin-Ryu Karate-do honoring its roots in Okinawa, the birthplace of Karate.

This is the core of the dojo. We practice traditional Seibukan Shorin-Ryu Karate as it comes from Okinawa. The work is in the body—developing structure, awareness, and the ability to move with purpose. Over time, the practice builds discipline, focus, and a deeper understanding of how the body works in motion. We cultivate precision in technique, strength and grace in the body, effectiveness in self-defence, and elevation of the spirit.

SEMINARS AND WORKSHOPS

Seminars and workshops offer an opportunity to step outside regular practice and engage more deeply with the art. These gatherings bring together instructors and practitioners for focused study, hands-on learning, and shared experience. Whether centered on kata, body mechanics, kobudō, or related disciplines, each session is designed to support understanding through direct practice and exploration. Offered both in-person and, when appropriate, online, seminars and workshops create space for connection, continued learning, and the ongoing development of the practice.

THE VAULT

This is where ongoing study takes place through video, writing, and shared material. Some of this work is available directly, while other parts live on independent platforms that host and organize the content. Much of the existing material has been developed over time through continued study and documentation, including work shared through Kyan's Karate .com  and  Listening to Okinawa Karate .com.  Those platforms operate independently and may require a subscription to access full content. This space will continue to grow, offering both open material and pathways into deeper study for those who want to go further.

ARCHIVES

A growing collection of material for reference and deeper exploration. A place to return to material that has been recorded and preserved over time. This includes documented work and existing collections, offering a way to revisit and see things more clearly as understanding develops. Included are recordings of Hanshi Zenpo Shimabukuro and Kyoshi Zenshun Shimabukuro performing the full Seibukan requirements, serving as a direct reference to the practice as it has been passed on. Some material may be accessed through external collections where this work is organized and maintained.

RESEARCH

Ongoing collaboration, study, writing, and documentation of living traditions.

A place to explore the practice more closely through writing, reflection, and ongoing study. This work develops over time through careful observation, questioning, and experience. It may include contributions from others who are engaged in the same process, with the aim of deepening understanding rather than collecting information.
